US 212 is a US Highway in the US state of South Dakota. The road forms an east-west route through the center of the state, from the Wyoming border through Belle Fourche and Watertown to the Minnesota border. US 212 is 660 kilometers long in South Dakota.

US 212 in Wyoming comes from Billings and heads east via Belle Fourche. the route west of the Missouri River leads through a very remote area with barely paved roads. The nearest alternate routes are 30 miles north or south, and large portions of US 212 pass through Native American reservations. One crosses Lake Oahe, into which the Missouri is dammed, and then slowly eastwards into a more cultivated area with more farms and villages. The largest town on the route is Watertown in eastern South Dakota, where it intersects Interstate 29. Further east it follows the border with Minnesota. US 212 in Minnesota then continues toward Minneapolis.

History

US 212 was created in 1926 and its western starting point was initially Belle Fourche. In 1939 the route was extended further through Wyoming to Montana. The route is not of major transit importance, but it is the only long-distance route in the region.

Traffic intensities

Every day, 1,500 vehicles travel at the Wyoming border and 400 to 800 vehicles across the lonely areas east of Belle Fourche to the Missouri River. East of the Missouri, traffic volumes remain very low, barely exceeding 600 to 1,000 vehicles as far as Redfield. From Redfield to Watertown, the intensities slowly increase from 1,500 to 3,100 vehicles. This drops back to 1,500 vehicles on the Minnesota border.
