History

US 1 was created in 1926 and the route has not been modified in New Hampshire since then. In 1923, the Memorial Bridge opened at Portsmouth on the Maine border. This bridge was closed in 2011 due to its poor condition, and was replaced by a new bridge in 2013, causing a temporary interruption in US 1. The new bridge opened to traffic on August 8, 2013. In 1940 the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge of the US 1 Bypass opened and in 1950 the parallel Interstate 95 opened, so that US 1 no longer had any through-importance early on, and therefore was not developed to a high standard.
