Casper

State Route 220, also known as WYO 220 is a state route in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The road forms an east-west junction in the middle of the state, between Muddy Gap Junction and Casper, Wyoming’s second largest city. WYO 220 is 117 kilometers long.

Travel directions

WYO 220 on the border with Carbon County.

Near the hamlet of Muddy Gap, WYO 220 begins at an intersection with US 287, with the route from Rawlins to Casper set up for through traffic, traffic wishing to follow US 287 should turn off here. WYO 220 generally runs northeast through desolate desert and steppe. The road does not pass through villages until Casper, although the hamlet of Alcova is not far from the road. The road leads in a wide arc around the Pathfinder Reservoir and past the Alcova Reservoir. The height differences on the route are quite small, the road does not cross any mountain ranges, nor are they in the vicinity, except just before Casper. Even before Casper, WYO 220 counts 2×2 lanes and is a divided highwayuntil Casper. WYO 220 continues west of Casper, past downtown, and terminates at a junction with Interstate 25.

History

It is not known what number the road had in the early 1920s. Between 1926 and 1938 it was part of US 87E. In 1938 this was renumbered as WYO 220. Since then, the road has been little modified in terms of route, except for the connection to the I-25 in Casper. The 2×2 section in Casper was already built in or before the 1980s, but was extended a little in 2012 to just south of Bessemer Bend.

Combined with US 287, WYO 220 forms the primary connection to and from Casper from southwest Wyoming, from Rawlins and Interstate 80 west of it. WYO 220 therefore has some continuing interest.

Traffic intensities

Usually 2,000 vehicles drive daily between US 287 and Casper, which gradually increases closer to Casper, to 3,600 vehicles just before Bessemer Bend and 5,000 vehicles on the 2×2 section outside Casper. This increases to a maximum of 25,000 vehicles in Casper itself.

State Route 230, also known as WYO 230 is a state route in the U.S. state of Wyoming. The road forms an east-west route through the south of the state between Saratoga and the college town of Laramie, and is interrupted by a portion of the route that runs through Colorado. WYO 230 is 127 kilometers in total.

Travel directions

WYO 230 begins south of Saratoga village at an intersection with WYO 130, which forms a direct route to Laramie from here. WYO 230 first heads south through a valley narrowing to the south. To the west is the Sierra Madre Range with peaks up to 3,500 meters, to the east the Snowy Range with peaks up to 3,600 meters. The road itself runs at an altitude of 2,200 to 2,400 meters.

The road has to go around the Snowy Range and does it through the state of Colorado. WYO 230 is interrupted by SH 125 and SH 127. 17 kilometers east as the crow flies, WYO 230 re-enters Wyoming and heads northeast through the forests of the Snowy Range. The last 40 kilometers to Laramie pass through a flatter area. At Laramie there is a connection to Interstate 80, after which WYO 230 ends at US 287 at the center.

History

WYO 230 is one of two winter hardy routes through the Snowy Range west of Laramie. The main route is I-80 or US 30, and the most direct route is WYO 130, which is closed during the winter. WYO 230 is the southern alternative, although I-80 or US 30 are faster. Outside Laramie the road is a regular single carriageway through sparsely populated area.

Traffic intensities

1,200 vehicles travel daily between Saratoga and Riverside, but only 300 vehicles continue to the Colorado state border. The eastern section has 700 vehicles in the Snowy Range and 2,000 vehicles across the plains to Laramie, peaking at 17,000 vehicles at the junction with I-80 in Laramie.
