Alaska is one of the westernmost states of the United States, borders Canada to the east and is further surrounded by the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Alaska measures almost 1.5 million square kilometers and is therefore the same size as the Benelux, France and Spain combined. Yet only 800,000 people live there and most residents live close to the largest city of Anchorage, or capital Juneau. Alaska is mountainous and rugged and has hardly a road network. Most transport is by air and sea. Temperatures range from 23 degrees Celsius in summer to -30 degrees Celsius in winter.
Traveling to Alaska
Nature. Overwhelming nature. Alaska is the land of rugged coastlines, vast expanses of snow and endless roads. By ship, train or sturdy camper you travel along the coast or through the interior to above the Arctic Circle. Enjoy the midsummer night sun or the spectacular Northern Lights in Fort Yukon, or venture further afield through some of the most pristine landscapes in the world. You can go all the way to the Arctic Sea at Barrow, the northernmost settlement in the US, with 4,300 Eskimo inhabitants.
Spotlight op Fairbanks
Once the center of the Gold Rush, Fairbanks is now Alaska’s second largest city. With its central location, a perfect base to discover Alaska. Search for gold, canoe on the Chena River, spot reindeer, brave the cold in the Ice Museum or take a long walk. And the best reason to go to Fairbanks? From August to April there is a good chance that you will see the Northern Lights. This helped Fairbanks rank second on Lonely Planet’s top 10 American places to visit in 2013.
